A. IPL and Laser Treatments

The laser emits a single colour of light (wavelength), which is carefully selected depending upon the skin condition to be treated.

An IPL – Intense Pulsed Light – is a broad band light source that emits its light over a light spectrum (many wavelengths) and is very useful for Skin Rejuvenation as a number of skin concerns can be addressed at once.

With our laser and IPL technology we can provide the following treatments:

01. Laser Hair Removal Treatment
02. Removal of Facial Thread Veins, Redness, Rosecea and Leg Vein Treatment
03. Pigmented Lesions
04. Acne Treatment
05. Skin Rejuvenation

L.A.S.E.R. is the acronym for Light Amplified by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation. The laser emits a single colour of light (wavelength), which is carefully selected depending upon the skin condition to be treated.

Marsh Medical Skin Clinic uses the Lynton Lumina System which consists of IPL and an ND:YAG Laser. IPL treatments willl be performed for hair removal, skin rejuvenation, pigmented lesions, Rosecea and Facial Thread Veins and Acne.

The ND YAG Laser is used for the Leg Vein treatment, as these reside deeper within the skin.

02. Removal of Facial Thread Veins, Redness, Rosecea and Leg Vein Treatment

Marsh Medical Skin ClinicFacial thread veins or broken red veins (telangiectasia) are small unsightly superficial red, purple or blue veins that occur around the nose and across the cheeks and chin. These broken veins occur when the vein dilates and become larger so they are visible through the transparency of the skin. Although facial veins / spider veins are quite common they can cause some distress and embarrassment for those who have them.

Facial veins may be hereditary or as a result of a variety of factors including damage from sun exposure, wind and the extremes of temperature. The over use of steroid creams and certain auto immune conditions may also induce thread veins. Often the exact cause is unknown and may just be part of the natural ageing process or as a part of a skin condition called rosacea.

Marsh Medical Skin ClinicFacial vessels are effectively treated with Intense Pulse Light (IPL) or laser with minimal downtime or risk in just a few quick, easy treatments. We can also treat birthmarks such as port wine stains and vascular scarring.

Treatment is suitable for you if you want to:

• Reduce overall facial redness and reduce blushing
• Be rid of embarrassing broken veins or red spots
• Have clearer, brighter, fresher looking skin
• Suitable for face, neck and chest

Marsh Medical Skin ClinicCommon Questions

How are thread veins treated?
Both Intense Pulse Light and laser systems emit light which is readily absorbed by blood vessels, heating them to point where they are destroyed. Following treatment, the vessels quickly clear as they are reabsorbed by the body, leaving little or no trace of the original lesion. For Intense Pulsed Light treatment a thin layer of chilled gel is applied to the skin to aid light absorption by the vessel. The light is then pulsed over the entire area to be treated. The chilled gel is removed and the area cooled. A similar process is carried out for laser treatment except the chilled gel is not required. During the treatment, protective eyewear will be worn.

How many treatments are necessary?
Typically three to four treatments are needed for maximum results, though small lesions may clear in just a single session. For general redness and rosacea five or more treatments may be required. Repeat sessions are spaced every four to six weeks.

How long does each treatment take?
Treatment is relatively quick and can be just 10 minutes for a single lesion or up to 45 minutes for a full face.

How long do the results last?
Immediately after treatment some thread veins will disappear but may re-occur a few days later, but be less visible. With further treatment these vessels will disappear and are not likely to reoccur. However, once you have a tendancy to facial redness you always will so new veins may appear at some point in the future making further treatment necessary. Maintenance sessions may not be required for several years though, as results are long-lasting. To help prevent new veins forming we strongly advise the use of a good sunscreen such as ‘Radical Defense’ to protect the skin from damage.

What does treatment feel like?
Treatment is mildly uncomfortable but there is no need for anaesthesia and the procedure is actually quite quick. Sensations vary but most people describe it as a very quick, hot pin prick.

Leg Veins

Leg veins are being treated with the LP Nd:YAG laser system. The target are the blue/purple vessels and these tend to reside deeper within the skin than the superficial red vessels often found on the cheeks and as such require a more penetrating wavelength than the IPL, making them ideal for the treatment with the long-plused Nd:YAG laser.

03. Pigmented Lesions

Marsh Medical Skin ClinicSun spots, liver spots, freckles and other unwanted pigmentation are often associated with skin ageing and over exposure to the sun or sunbeds. From the age of about 40 the skin is less able to regenerate from sun exposure and age spots start to appear. Generally these age spots pose no health risk, however they can be unsightly and create a patchy, less youthful appearance. Freckling and age spots are successfully lightened or removed with Laser or Intense Pulse Light.

IPL or Intense Pulse Light skin rejuvenation and pigment removal treatment is a relatively quick and easy procedure. Age spots and freckles can be lightened or removed in as little as one to three treatment sessions. The light targets areas of excess pigment safely breaking down the excess melanin. The sun spots or freckles darken in the first few days after treatment and then the excess melanin sheds naturally away.

Treatment is suitable for you if:

• You want a more even skin tone
• You want to reduce areas of excess freckling
• You want to target a specific age spot

Common Questions

How does Intense Pulse Light Work?
The Intense Pulse Light System releases short pulses of filtered light that is readily absorbed by the high concentration of melanin found within freckles, sun spots or liver spots. The rapid absorption of light energy heats the melanin and eradicates the melanin-rich cells.

Am I suitable for treatment?
Most people are suitable for treatment except for very dark skinned or tanned individuals. However, large, raised and dark pigmentation cannot be treated and may need to be assessed by our Medical Advisor. Dark moles should not be treated nor would we advise IPL for melasma, this would be better suited to fractional laser.

What does treatment feel like?
Treatment is mildly uncomfortable and a warm, tingling sensation not unlike sunburn is experienced afterwards.

What will I look like after treatment?
The skin may be slightly red and the pigment marks will darken and may appear more obvious before they fade away.

Are there any side effects?
Most people experience little more than slight reddening and possibly mild swelling which usually disappear within hours to a couple of days. Very rarely a small blister may form or temporary lightening or darkening of the skin can occur.

04. Acne Treatments

Marsh Medical Skin ClinicAcne is a common skin condition that frequently affects teenagers and young adults of both sexes. However, adults of all ages from mid twenties through to mid fifties are increasingly affected and troubled by congested skin, blocked pores and skin blemishes. You don’t have to let acne spoil your life. Marsh Medical Skin Clinic offers a range of successful acne treatments to leave your skin clear and blemish free. All acne healing treatments offered and can be carried out as stand alone therapies or in combination with other acne treatments for maximum benefit.

What Causes Acne?

The presence of acne is often influenced by the following factors:

Influence #1: Hormones
For the majority of acne sufferers, outbreaks begin at puberty because the body begins to produce hormones called androgens. These hormones cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge, which is a natural part of the body’s development but for acne sufferers these glands are over stimulated. Androgens are also responsible for acne flare-ups associated with the menstrual cycle and, on occasion, pregnancy.

Influence #2: Oily Skin
When the sebaceous gland is stimulated by androgens, it produces extra sebum (oil). Sebum mixes with common skin bacteria and dead skin cells that have been shed from the lining of the follicle. While this process is normal, the presence of extra sebum in the follicle increases the chances of clogging and can cause acne. Stress levels have also affected sebum production and can increase severity of acne.

Influence #3: Bacteria
The bacterium Propionibacterium acnes, (P. acnes for short) is present on all skins and is part of the skin’s natural sebum maintenance system. Once a follicle is plugged, P. acnes bacteria multiply rapidly, creating the chemical reaction we know as inflammation in the follicle and surrounding skin.

Influence #4: Inflammation
When you are exposed to unwanted bacteria your immune system sends in an army of white blood cells to attack. This is why pimples can be red, swollen and painful. The inflammatory response is different for everyone, but studies have shown that it is especially strong in adult women.

Fortunately, you have options! There are many kinds of acne treatments available. Like you, acne is highly individual and response to treatments does vary from person to person. Often several treatments are recommended in combination. We offer an extensive range of acne treatments and will advise on the most suitable procedure for you and your skin.

Recent studies seem to indicate that yellow light (585nm), is effective in vivo at targeting the bacteria that causes acne. These Broadband IPL light sources offer shorter wavelengths for optimum surface bacteria destruction, whilst also getting to the deep-seated bacteria existing in pustules and papules and damaging the sebaceous glands themselves. In this way we can control Acne.

Treatment is suitable for you if you want to:

• Reduce number of spots and blemishes
• Calm inflamed, painful acne
• Accelerate healing of red blemishes and acne scars
• Have clearer, brighter, fresher looking skin

05. Skin Rejuvenation

Marsh Medical Skin ClinicSun-damaged facial skin which can present itself in many forms: wrinkles and fine lines are often accompanied by dry and rough skin, mottled skin tone and areas of abnormal pigmentation. Lentigines. ( also known as age or sun spots) and epilelides(freckles) are common, superficial, pigmented lesions can become an issue of cosmetic concern. Vascular irregularities such as telangiectasias and rosacea can also contribute to overall skin tone irregularities. The IPL skin rejuvenation treatment can be used to treat the entire face paying particular attention to areas of excess pigmentation or vascular irregularity. As well as improving overall skin tone, an improvement in skin texture and pore size is observed, leaving the skin softer and more radiant.
