Swedish Massage
What is a Swedish Massage?
The term “Swedish Massage” refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart.
Swedish massage was developed in the 1700′s by a Swedish doctor named Per Henrik Ling.
Purpose of Swedish Massage
The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles.
Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Swedish massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management. It also has many specific medical uses.
Benefits of Swedish Massage
Swedish massage feels good, is relaxing and invigorating. It affects the nerves, muscles, glands, and circulation, while promoting health and well being.
Deep Tissue Massage
Our therapists are specially trained in deep tissue massage. Deep Tissue Massage is a massage technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It helps loosen muscle tissues, releases toxins from muscles and gets blood and therefore oxygen circulating properly.
Technique
Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish massage, but the pressure will generally be more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or knots (also known as “adhesions”). Similar to Swedish massage, deep tissue massage uses slower and firmer strokes and pressure than other treatments – deep finger pressure that concentrates on particular areas, and follows or goes across the fibres of muscles and tendons.
Benefits
Chronic pain, limited mobility, recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury), repetitive strain injury (e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome), postural problems, osteoarthritis pain, fibromyalgia, muscle tension or spasm.
Deep tissue massage is often used to treat people who are recovering from accidents, and for sports injuries as it increases blood circulation in muscles that are underused, relieves chronic muscle tension throughout the body, and can also break down scar tissue and “knots” deep in the muscles.
The aim of deep tissue massage is to tackle particular physical, muscular problems. Consider going for a sauna or steam bath before and/or after your massage. This will definitely soothe and warm the muscles and boost the effectiveness of the treatment.
You may feel a bit sore, or tired after a deep tissue massage though, so give yourself plenty of time to get there and get settled, and to have a lie-down or a shower afterwards. Any discomfort should go away within a few hours. Because many toxins are released, it’s important to drink plenty of water after a deep-tissue session to help eliminate these toxins from the body.
Lymphatic Drainage Massage
Developed in the 1930s, lymphatic drainage is a delicate form of massage that stimulates the body’s lymphatic system, improving the metabolism, helping the body to eliminate waste and toxins and providing a boost to the immune system.
How does it work?
The lymphatic system is responsible for helping fluid and waste leave the body and for regulating the immune system. When the lymphatic system becomes blocked, fluid builds up and stagnates, causing the entire system to become toxic, making us feel sluggish and more susceptible to viral or contagious diseases.
By stimulating this system through massage, it works more efficiently, which in turn boosts the immune system, clears blockages, eliminates toxins, transports nutrients to cells and increases the metabolism.
What is it good for?
Lymphatic drainage massage is especially useful for individuals who seem to suffer regularly from common illnesses like colds and flu. It is also recommended for people who lead sedentary lifestyles, or those who want to reduce puffiness or swelling. It has been cited as having a positive effect on problem skin, cellulite, dysfunctional respiratory systems and people with low energy.
What are the benefits?
Lymphatic drainage massage boosts the immune system so, as well as helping the body ward off illness, treatment can facilitate general feelings of health and vitality. It also has a positive physical effect, improving the appearance of the skin and reducing puffiness caused by water retention, poor circulation or pregnancy. As with other massage, it can help with pain from fractures and sprains and rheumatism, and it promotes the body’s own healing mechanisms. Lymphatic drainage massage utilises very light pressure
Hot Stone Therapy
Hot stone therapy / massage is a kind of massage that uses treated volcanic rocks such as basalt and basinite that are believed to promote relaxation as well as eliminating negative energy within the client’s body, mind and soul.
These stones are carefully gathered and handcrafted for various sizes, shapes and weights according to what part of the body it will be use on. It could be as small as the size of the thumb or could be as large as about 2 to 3 pounds of weight.
On most treatment, the stones are put on the chakra points of the body along the spine. The chakra points are the body’s energy center. It is believed to vitalize the physical body. When stimulated, it balances energy flow throughout the body.
Hot stone therapy / massage is likewise considered more gentle to the body compared with Swedish massage or deep tissue massage since hot stone practitioner uses the stone instead of their hands to massage. However gentle it may seem so, therapists are able to reach ten times deeper during the massage than through the use of mere fingers making it more intense than a regular Swedish massage.
The stones are heated using water with temperature ranging from 120 – 130 degree Fahrenheit although usual treatment requires alternating the use of hot basalt or basinite stones and much colder stones like marble ones.
It is believed that the combination of warmth and cool treatment encourages the body to relax, detox and heal.
Other benefits of hot stone massage / therapy include:
• Muscle relaxation
